Palin

In a sense, this pick is very encouraging. No way the McCain campaign makes this gamble unless they feel they have to shake things up in order to remain competitive. And to be honest, the pick reflects the general theme of the campaign. Stuck without popular policy positions, McCain has been forced to run on image and biography. This choice brings nothing to the table policy-wise, and is entirely about image and identity politics. If you know you’re beat on the substance, may as well go whole hog on the other stuff.

Can someone who has so far been confined to a very small stage hold up under the bright lights of a presidential contest? I don’t know; I’d crack in a minute. And for an old guy running on his supposed wisdom, a few gaffes from his veep pick could do a great deal of damage.

There’s a lot of risk involved here, and as compelling as the Obama message is, I doubt they’re nervous. We’ll see, but I welcome the coming campaign.

Based on my 5 minutes of wikipedia research, Palin seems like an energy moderate and social conservative.

She provides the Democrats with two obvious attack strategies.

    1) The McCain camp can no longer be taken seriously attacking Obama’s lack of experience. Palin was mayor a tiny backwater town two years ago. Obama is an elder stateman comparatively.

    2) She may be female, but she’s anti-abortion. If the Dems play that up I imagine there will be few Hillary turncoats.

But, the conservatives are excited about the choice, because Palin speaks to the issues McCain hasn’t for them. She is more conservative! Her speech was geared toward conservative, middle class voters and I think it was pretty successful, because she is truly that. I don’t think it will sway many Clinton supporters, but some of the blue collar and rural people who supported Clinton just may like Palin.

She’s an experience pol in that she has a scandal going right now.

At any rate, this pick smells desperate to me. I like it a lot. Can their opponents smell the blood and put them away? Recent history doesn’t give me confidence, alas.
