Moving Day

Dear readers, I have some news. I have decided to accept an invitation from Portfolio.com to blog for them, in the Market Movers spot recently vacated by the excellent Felix Salmon, who’s now at Reuters. My new address is here (and the RSS feed is here), and if you surf on over you’ll see an artist’s conception of my mug, and soon, posts. I’ll be covering economics and finance topics, and Portfolio will also allow me to indulge my interests in environmental issues and all things urban.
The move means a departure from The Economist, which has, over the past two years, offered me an unparalleled platform and opportunity, for which I’m very grateful. I hope that Free Exchange devotees will continue to read the blog, which has been left in very good hands.
It also means that after nearly three years and two thousands posts, The Bellows will be going on hiatus. When I began this site back in the summer of 2006, I scarcely knew why I was starting a blog or what I was going to do with it. Now, it’s practically an extension of my brain — a repository of ideas I’ve had, good and bad, a record of my experience of this ongoing crisis, and a history of how my thinking and writing have changed over the past three years. I’m quite sad to be leaving it, but it will remain up and accessible, waiting for some future purpose.
Readers and commenters, I want to thank you for input and attention over these last few years. I hope you’ll follow me over to Portfolio and continue to offer your invaluable thoughts and criticisms. A blog is nothing without an audience, and I’ve been lucky to have an excellent one.
So that’s that. Thanks to all, and I’ll see you at Portfolio.

Congratulations. I look forward to following your new work. Maybe you can be the one to finally explain CDOs so’s I get it.

Congratulations.
It will be a crime, though, if cut back on your urban economics writing.

Congratulations. I’ll miss our little community over here, but I suppose it’s time we all learned to play well with the wider world.

I hope they let you write about this stuff over there. If not, they are participating in the urbanism brain drain.

Coming back for a second comment (as I will now, annoyingly, at Portfolio.com) it’s worth adding that I find Free Exchange, which I’ve been reading off and on since about when it began, to be a much better, more interesting and more informative site than it was a few years back.
Portfolio is likewise lucky to get you.

So, are you going to take my advice and sell this domain name to a porn company? Because when I think “Ryan Avent,” I think “tentacles.”
Congratulations. Now, back to work, you.
