More Population Notes

A commenter notes that Pittsburgh enjoyed net domestic in-migration in 2009, for the first time in ages. Philadelphia didn’t quite manage that, but it did manage net population growth.

Much of that may be due to Marcellus shale workers, as said in previous comments. I hope they stay too, Pittsburgh is a great place to live.

I do have one question though: is this data for the City of Pittsburgh or for the Pittsburgh metro area? The City itself is quite small, 300,000 some people in a not-so-large geographic area. Allegheny County, which contains Pittsburgh, however, is large. A lot of people who call themselves “Pittsburghers” acually live in Mt. Lebanon, Scott Twp, Castle Shannon, Homestead, etc.

It’s MSA data and much bigger than the City of Pittsburgh.

  3. Jim Russell says:

Perhaps more significantly, Allegheny County reports net domestic inmigration for the period. The county actually stopped shrinking even considering natural decrease. However, the MSA continued to shrink.
