Superdelegates

One shouldn’t count chickens before they hatch, etc., but it seems that Obama has an excellent chance at winning the District primary tomorrow. Should that be the case, it would be incredibly unfortunate if the District’s superdelegates essentially undid the wishes of the voting public. Though the vote won’t begin for another twelve hours, eleven Washington superdelegates have already committed to Hillary Clinton. Some of them, like Harold Ickes, are deep in Hillary’s pocket and probably won’t change their commitment at the convention. Others, like Mary Cheh, Jack Evans, and Jim Graham, are themselves elected officials of this city, bound to serve Washingtonians. It is especially galling that D.C. Councilmembers, so familiar with the frustration of disenfranchisement, would contribute to the further erosion of the District’s electoral clout.
It is a rare occasion that the people of Washington can fully exercise their right to participate in the business of the national government. I would hope that the members of the District Council would agree to cast their votes for the candidate chosen by the people in tomorrow’s primary. I would hope that all of us would make sure they know we expect that of them.
UPDATE: Or maybe the Councilmembers aren’t superdelegates? Seriously, could the DNC clear this up?
Anyway, I wish Harold Ickes and Co. would explain why they deserve to override the decision of the voting people of Washington.

I read that Michael Brown and Paul Strauss (the shadow senators) are superdelegates but hell if you can find a way to contact them online. Shadow senators should have websites, too.
I did find their phone numbers:
Brown, Michael (202) 741-5019
Strauss, Paul (202) 727-7890
(The Obama campaign had been suggesting that people call and respectfully request that they vote for him.)

You are expressing puzzlement that these folks would ignore the wishes of their electorate? These are people who want appointive positions in a Clinton Administration. They are just like the apparatchiks who attached themselves to Bush 41 and Bush 43: checking the boxes on an application form for Deputy Undersecretary of XXX. Some would be good Deputy Undersecretaries, some less so. But the form is being filled in.
If the tide starts to flow strongly in the other direction, they will switch. But for now, they are doubling down.

You’re an economist - you’ve read Buchanan… here is Ron Fornier suggesting that superdelegates are backing Clinton because they see it as in their interest, and that that will change soon: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_campaignplus/on_deadline_clinton

Don’t worry. I think that you’ll get your wish.
